“From female infanticide to lower wages, from denial of education to dowry rituals, from widows being ostracized to physical violence – and these are only some of the issues – women face many problems simply because they are women”. A non-formal literacy center at Arumbakkam teaches women to read and write and also provides supplementary education to children who come with their mothers. Some deserving children are also provided with scholarship to pursue their higher studies.
ROSHNI identified the Neelam Basha Dargah Center at Dr.Natesan Road with the help of the center for Labour Education and Development. This is one of ROSHNI’s premiere centers with a variety of ongoing schemes and activities. The crèche at this center is meant for the children of beedi workers living in the nearby neighbourhood. At present there are 35 children on rolls and these children are well taken care of, under ROSHNI’s operation.
The Rajiv Gandhi Center situated at Uthandi, when it was a need, it catered to the children of the fishermen after school hours. ROSHNI organized periodical medical camps and counseling sessions.
Dr.Besant Road ROSHNI center is a pioneer in conducting literacy programmes for downtrodden women. Till date more than 100 women of this area are declared functionally literate within a time span of six years and are encouraged with the award of appropriate certificates at the annual functions of ROSHNI.
Pattur center of ROSHNI has been highly successful in the conduct of vocational training programmes in tailoring and many girls of this center have achieved self employment as well as secured jobs in garment exporting industrial units. The local population is very co-operative and also the ROSHNI department of this area has become a permanent tailoring unit with continuous year long courses and many trainees are turning into successful women entrepreneurs.
Pattur center is taking off with the formation of Self Help Groups as well as regular non formal education courses for school drop outs and older women.
ROSHNI’s Washermanpet Center utilizes the vocational training, tailoring and adult literacy as measures of prime thrust. The center has gained considerable popularity and carries on its rolls not less than 30 students in tailoring and literacy every year. This center specialises in running secretarial classes like typewriting and spoken English.
Cathedral Garden Center gained prominence in view of the conduct of office assistant programmes with the generous offer of space by the treasurer of ROSHNI and the trained candidates securing gainful employment in leading catering and industrial undertakings.
